Somatic Therapy

Somatic Experiencing resolves symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies. When we are stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze, SE helps us release, recover, and become more resilient (Somatic Experiencing International).

Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, SE operates on the premise that trauma can disrupt the body’s natural ability to regulate itself, leading to various physical and psychological symptoms. SE utilizes body awareness, helping individuals recognize and process sensations linked to chronic stress or trauma. SE is highly effective for general stress relief and resilience training, helping individuals strengthen their nervous system’s capacity to handle life’s challenges.​

What to expect in an SE session:

Rather than focusing on retelling traumatic events, the process emphasizes physiological awareness. SE engages present-moment awareness by tracking physical sensations such as muscle tension, heart rate, and breath, to restore self-regulation.

The therapeutic process is introduced gradually, using titration, so that distressing experiences are worked through in small, manageable doses, preventing overwhelm. Core techniques include, pendulation, which involves moving between states of activation and improved regulation, thus increasing nervous system flexibility and conscious control over regulation.
The SIBAM model, which tracks sensation, imagery, behavior, affect, and meaning offers a variety of awareness practices to support the unique needs of participants.

Practitioners guide clients in developing internal and external resources to build safety and stability. As stored survival energy is released equilibrium is restored and symptoms of chronic stress are reduced.
